Developing Strong Abs and a Strong Core: Part One

by pilates32 on March 4, 2012

Not only do many people want to feel strong, they want to look strong too. We are concerned with that which we can see, probably much more that we are concerned with how we feel or how we are in regards to health and fitness. Thankfully, Pilates takes care of both. It not only improves your core strength, posture and alignment, but at the same time it leaves you looking dramatically different. You look and feel fitter and stronger.

This article will take a look at a tough but very effective Pilates exercise known as the roll up. For many of my clients, this exercise is their nemesis. You can either do it, or you can’t. If you do find this tough, be sure to work through the beginner and intermediate levels in the Pilates 32 System.

When performing the roll up be sure to focus on maintaining control and precision over your core and your feet. Be sure to not let them fly off the floor. As you lower to the floor, focus on scooping your stomach and imprinting your spine piece by piece into the floor to allow good control and activation of your entire core. As you come up from the floor, the same principles apply. Peel off with control, making sure you pull from the abdominals and not the hip flexors. For that extra benefit, reach far to the toes at the top of the move, getting the benefits of a spine and hamstring stretch between each repetition.

Ok, time to have a try…..
